Walk the wild side at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park
What you see – The entrance to the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park on the way to Rushikonda is hard to miss. It is located amidst the lush green hills of the area and occupies about 625 acres of land. The thick foliage and natural water bodies dotting the area, gives the place a jungle-like appearance, which is refreshing to see.
What you get - The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park offers a chance to see more than eighty species of animals, birds and reptiles in verdant surroundings.
Tickets to the park cost Rs. 15 for an adult and Rs. 5 for a child. You also have the option of taking your car inside; Rs. 200 is charged for a car with five people. And if you’re carrying a camera, don’t forget to buy a ticket for it as well. Those without their own vehicle can hop aboard the toy train run by the zoo, which takes visitors around. Make sure to check for its timings at the entrance.
Right at the beginning is the enclosure for big tortoises, we see one emerge from the little pool after a cooling swim. A little path to the right leads us past an idyllic pond, with mint green water, overhanging trees by the shore and a carpet of water lilies. This path leads to the reptile enclosures. We spot some rather large still as status crocodiles sunning themselves. Since it is a hot summer morning, most reptiles are at their laziest, snoozing under a rock or in the shade of a shrub. We see gharials, monitor lizards, a corpulent, fully grown python, a brood of star tortoises, terrapins and a pair of entwined rat snakes.
If you like the big cats, this zoo will not disappoint. The camouflaged lion resting under a clump of bamboos helps us detect him by emitting a series of loud roars, which send a shiver up our spine. The cat enclosures follow one another, so we see a tiger, a panther, a leopard, a jaguar, a civet cat and for the first time, a puma. We miss the hippo since it’s submerged in its private pool, but we do get to hear the booming but hilarious sounds of its flatulence! The bear enclosure has us enthralled as we lay our eyes on the jet black Himalayan sloth bear with its trademark white V on its chest. This one is very furry and appears quite menacing. We also see a hyena, a jackal, a large tusker and a family of baboons.
The bird species at the zoo are quite enchanting as well. There are exotic and wildly colorful African cockatoos, pristine white cockatoos with bright yellow crests, the local green parrots, hornbills, brilliant peacocks, rosy pelicans, storks and budgerigars. A dark and eerily lit enclosure for nocturnal animals houses different types of owls, porcupines, civets and other lesser known creatures. The deer enclosure is vast and populated by spotted deer, white deer, black bucks and other deer. These gentle creatures can be seen peacefully grazing in groups. Finally, we see the bison with their powerful builds and sharp horns.
Our verdict – The natural, tree-filled habitat of the zoo is impressive. It is good fun spotting animals in the large enclosures. The zoo is clean and has refreshment points, toilets and shaded benches at regular intervals. But many of the enclosures do not have signboards, so if you don’t see the animal, you will not know what to expect. You can visit from the gate on the Beach Road or from the gate on National Highway 5.
Anytime between – 9 AM – 5 PM (Closed on Mondays)
