The quest for physical fitness no longer goes hand-in-hand with the need for an hourglass figure alone. Today, it means a lot more – it works as a
perfect method to stay healthy and ‘flexible’, keeping those fragile joints (that may start acting up in old age) in working condition. Of course, the good old jog and brisk walk may suffice for a workout. But modern maladies of vehicular pollution and lack of breathing lungs (parks) in Vizag leave us with little choice. We head then to the next best option – trendy gyms and well-equipped fitness centers. MetroMela jogs down the city to give you the complete list of the popular ones.
It’s the top three
We’d like to call Talwalkars a sort of a pioneer in the concept of gym workouts in the country (set up in 1932 in Mumbai) since this fitness guru broke the myth that gyms are meant only for men’s bodybuilding. It opened new avenues for fitness back in the early ’80s, courtesy which women also took to gym workouts. In Vizag, this nationwide entity runs a swanky gym in the heart of the city, with ultra-modern facilities and imported exercise machines. Fitness options include free weights, strength training and Pilates, under the watchful eyes of qualified trainers. There’s also massage and steam to round off workouts, special ‘Just Stretch’ programs for kids, and also some weight-loss programs.
Ladies please - that’s what Take-30 is all about. A fitness center-cum-gym that caters exclusively to the women in the city, Take-30 follows the circuit system of training with hydraulics-based machines. This system works on fat loss and building of lean muscle rather than ‘weight loss’, with a combination of workouts, interspersed with a bit of aerobics. For energy-packed and structured fitness programs, Vyayaam Aerobics and Strength Studio is just the place. With Reebok-trained expert Ganga Raj at the helm, you can go fit with a combination of floor aerobics to thumping music, cardio workouts, etc. This gym in Vizag also runs Salsa and Jive classes on Sundays.
It’s the regulars
Universal Hi-tech Gym is for both men and women and has a mix of aerobics, yoga, weight training and machine-run fitness exercises. The other gym that caters to fitness needs is Power House Gym. Take your pick from exercise machines, personal dietary counseling and fitness programs on offer here. The gym, thoughtfully, has special timing slots for ladies only. Olympia at Dolphin Hotel in Vizag also caters to men and women separately. The gym here has state-of-the-art equipment, with facilities for steam, sauna and massage, and offers aerobic classes too.
It’s different
This is for those of you who are interested in weight loss alone – we’re referring to Vandana Luthra’s Curls and Curves (or VLCC as it is popularly known), a reputed name in the business of beauty, and also in weight reduction programs (a combination of diet control and high/low intensity exercises supervised by doctors, trainers and nutritionists).
Of course, everything has a limit, and that includes even exercise. MetroMela has a word of caution - avoid overdoing overzealous workouts, in that burning desire to shed those extra kilos fast or to get ‘extremely’ slim superfast, as these may harm you in the long run. Fortunately, most of these gyms in Vizag have professional trainers - so consult them and then create a personal workout routine, because - as they say in the fitness world - you know your body the best.
