What you see – Amongst the clutter of stores, both small and big, in Dabagardens (at the Hirawat corner) in Vizag, sits a colorful little shop Spice Girls. On the first floor, on the outside, we sight a huge colorful poster signage in flex, carrying a medley of women’s clothes and accessories. Inside the store, there’s a certain vibrancy that is hard to miss in all the dressy stuff that we see lined up in open shelves; the kind that could certainly spice up your party life in Vizag. The décor is a mockingly sober gray, as we eye dressy clothes, dressy footwear, and lots of dressy bags and accessories in a sweep.

What you get - Spice Girls is a colorful, fun and attractive ensemble of clothes and accessories for women - a lot like its young and bubbly owner Mani. She set up the shop (breaking away from a mundane desk job) in August 2008 in Vizag to give expression to her sense of retailing, design, color and taste. Thanks to her personal involvement in direct buys from dealers in Bangkok, Mumbai and Delhi, and even China, Vizagites can enjoy a whole range of peppy clothes, bags, purses, footwear and accessories for women.

At Spice Girls, bags (bold and beautiful) dominate with price tags from Rs. 400 to Rs. 3,500. Footwear follows in the shape of stilettos, platforms, open sandals and jute flip-flops (Rs. 200). There’s a tall shelf for a quick buy of shoes (Rs. 475 onwards) and clutch bags (Rs. 360 onwards) in matching pairs, which can be picked up as separates as well. Colors go from silver, gold, black, pink and blue. Spice Girls is also big on belts – very extensive in designs (slim and broad with brass buckles) and colors (again the pinks, blues, red, silver and gold).

Mani’s selection of clothes is in keeping with ‘trends’. In synthetics and cottons, the clothes are Indian and Western wear. There are fabrics too (complete salwar sets) priced in the range of Rs. 400 to Rs. 3,500. Readymade sets in this category cost anything from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 15,000. The cotton kurtis are in simple designs in greens, reds and browns, with subtle zari borders (Rs. 370), and with heavy sequins and embroidery work (Rs. 490). Western attire tilts towards party wear with frilly skirts (Rs. 1,220 onwards), daring tops (Rs. 290 to Rs. 380) and minis in leather (Rs. 980) and white cottons (Rs. 465). There are some pretty frocks too (Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000).

We run a quick check on a counter, placed with accessories like hair clips, small and large stone-studded dangler earrings and bangles (big, chunky brass ones) that are quite nice.

Our verdict – MetroMela sees Spice Girls as a healthy competitor for Dolls ’n Chicks - the other popular ‘fashion’ source in the city. Ladies have a good place to buy for party wear and accessories in Vizag. The prices are competitive. Parking is difficult as the shop is along the main road.
